Dr. Teuro Miyazawa

BiographyTeruo Miyazawa is now working as a Project Leader and Professor of the Food and Biotechnology Innovation Project in a New Industry Creation Hatchery Center (NICHe) at Tohoku University, Sendai, Japan.
He received his Ph.D. in Lipid Chemistry from Tohoku University in 1982 where he developed a chemiluminescence detection-high performance liquid chromatography (CL-HPLC) method and apparatus for measuring lipid hydroperoxides formed in food processing and biological systems. After that, he carried out his research as a visiting scientist in the USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging (HNRCA) at Tufts University, Boston, USA, to study oxidative challenges on the human brain in Alzheimer disease during his stay in 1995-1996.
In 1998 he was appointed a Professorship position on food chemistry and nutrition at the Graduate School of Agricultural Science (GSAS), Tohoku University, and an author and co-author of over 500 scientific papers, book chapters, books, and patents on the health functionalities of food lipids, lipid oxidations, vitamins, antioxidants and biofactors. From 2013, he was installed as a Project Leader and Professor of the Food and Biotechnology Innovation Project in a New Industry Creation Hatchery Center (NICHe) of Tohoku University. He has served as a Deputy Dean of GSAS and Council Member for Education and Researches of Tohoku University.
He received the Young Scientist Award of the Japan Bioscience, Biotechnology, and Agrochemistry Society (JSBBA) in 1988； Excellent Thesis Award of the Japan Oil Industry Association 1990； The Japan Oil Chemists' Society Award 2000； Asahi Beer Life Science Award 2003； and JSNFS (Japan Society of Nutrition and Food Science) Excellent Research Award 2009. In 2010, he received the Ando Momofuku Prize and the Iijima Food Science Prize. In 2014, he received JSBBA Award for excellence in research on analytical chemistry of food components and nutrients.
Dr. Miyazawa serves now as a Member of the Science Council of Japan; Chair of the 12th Asian Congress of Nutrition ACN2015 at Yokohama (Japan); and a Council Member of the International Union of Nutritional Sciences (IUNS); and is Former President of JSNFS.
