Biography

Prof. Dr. Heiner Boeing is head of the Department of Epidemiology at the German Institute of Human Nutrition Potsdam-Rehbrücke. His academic link is with the University Potsdam, where he has a position as Associated Professor at the Institute of Nutritional Sciences.
He graduated in Nutritional Sciences and Home economics at the Justus Liebig University Giessen in 1978 and also in Epidemiology at the School of Public Health, UCLA, in 1987. The PhD-Thesis on risk factors for stomach cancer was conducted at the German Cancer Research Center in Heidelberg. In 1986 he started to work as post-doc at the Department of Epidemiology, German Cancer Research Center, Heidelberg on the relation between diet and cancer occurrence. During this time period he joined the EPIC collaboration together with his Head, Prof.Dr. Warendorf. After habilitation at the University Heidelberg, he moved to the newly established German Institute of Human Nutrition Potsdam-Rehbrücke. The campus of this new Institution belonged previously to the Central Institute of Nutrition of the GDR. At Potsdam-Rehbrücke, Heiner Boeing established the prospective EPIC-Potsdam Study with more than 27000 participants as one of the German contributions to the EPIC-Study. He also became head of the Department of Epidemiology.
